Paranoid Park is a masterpiece you may have never heard of. It follows a few days in the life of Alex (Gabe Nevin), a young skateboarder in Portland, Oregon. 'Something happened' to Alex, something terrible that he may be held responsible for, and he knows the police are trying to identify him. He is haunted by his conscience and fear of being found out. The non-narrative structure of the film seems to mirror Alex's state-of-mind, with dreamy escapist visions of skateboarders, interspersed with unwanted flashbacks and the stark reality of dealing with people who don't know of his burden. Writer-Director Gus Van Sant took a young skateboarder who was auditioning to be an extra and made him the star of the movie. It was a perfect choice. With large, open eyes and a nearly-expressionless face, he's like a living renaissance painting. Some complained that he was 'no actor, ' but he didn't need to be. Here it's the experienced actors who stick out like sore thumbs. They make you want to say, 'Stop acting!' And there is a masterful use of music, ranging from rock (the Revolts) through folk (Elliott Smith) to classical (Beethoven) and musique concrete (Robert Normandeau).
